Managing a stew who is better than you at one thing

A chief who is threatened by talent will run a nervous boat. Use her. Credit her. Keep the standard.

Someone on your team will fold better, or speak better French, or know wine deeper than you. Good. Put her where she shines and still own the whole picture. The interior is not a competition with your own stew.

Give the why, not just the what. 'Glasses like this because the owner hates the sound of a rim on marble.' People rise to a standard they understand.

Correct in private. Praise in the crew mess if it is real. Never dress a stew down in front of guests. Never dress her down in front of deck if you can help it. The boat talks.

Rotas that are fair, nights that are protected when the guest plan allows, and food for your team that is not an afterthought. They will run through a charter for a chief who is just.

If someone is not at standard after training and time, you already know. Document, speak, decide. A weak link in interior is visible to guests in a way deck can sometimes hide. That is our burden. Carry it early.
