When to disappear

Presence is a skill. Absence is a higher one.

If the conversation is going, do not refill a glass that is still half full just to have a task. If a couple is on the aft and the sun is dropping, you are not a third person in the photograph.

Stand where you can see a hand lift. Not where you are in the story. Learn the boat's sightlines. Learn the guest's pride. Some people cannot relax if a stew is 'hovering.' Some cannot relax if the water is empty. The book will tell you. Until then, watch.

The highest compliment I have received was a guest who said they forgot we were there, and also never wanted for anything. That is the work.
